After all the things Trump has done with his first year of his second term, threatening to invade and completely take over Greenland, strikes me as the most dangerous action yet. Never in my wildest dreams did I foresee a day in which the greatest threat to European sovereignty would be the United States. But, here we are.
Our European allies are declaring their support of Denmark (also a US ally) and Greenland. In those countries there are thousands protesting against Trump and his declaration that Greenland will be American territory.
I would expect every leader and politician in Davos this week to push back and deny the little piggy another piece of pie. Apparently though, that is not happening and Gavin Newsom had a nice little quote in The Guardian regarding the leaders still afraid of Trump and even worse, those groveling at his feet, “It’s time to buck up, it’s time to get serious and stop being complicit. I can’t take this complicity. People rolling over. I should have brought kneepads for all the world leaders … this is pathetic.”
The same article shares this embarrassing detail about Mark Rutte, the secretary-general of NATO and former prime minister of the Netherlands, reporting that he sent Trump a message, praising him, “what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible.” Rutte is referring to a 4-day ceasefire between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces or SDF. One really has to do some digging to see if Trump played a significant role in this. The article from Al-Jazeera (linked above) only references a US proposal to be Syria’s main ally in fighting ISIS. However, this article from the BBC does not give Trump the same kind of credit Rutte does. And, somewhere out there, is probably a Fox News article describing the conflict as the 10th, 11th, or 12th war Trump has ended. I have lost count!
Either way, it is so incredibly sad to see how broken we are within our own borders, and yet, our deranged leader, once again, turns away from domestic affairs to international affairs because those get him the headlines, the publicity, and the respect or fear (he loves either one) from world leaders. My hope is that European leaders protect Denmark and Greenland. I hope they tariff the shit out of the US. I want to see people brave enough to fight back because no obsequious republican in this country is going to do it.
